The Association was originally formed in 1965. By 1990 it was called the - New Zealand Association of the Heads of University Residential Colleges and Halls - and used to meet every 2nd year.

In 1997 the name was changed to - New Zealand Association of Tertiary Education Accommodation Managers - to better reflect the organisation (NZATEAM). In 1998 after a bit of debate and controversy it was changed to what we have today New Zealand Association of Tertiary Education Accommodation Professionals (NZATEAP).

Since the 1990's NZATEAP has been focusing on delivering support to members in tertiary student accommodation through inductions, conferences, and networking events. It has established strong partnerships with a number of international associations.
